What is it in this specimen?

Plastinated half pig foetus sagittally sectioned, allowing continuous visualization of the fetal body from the cranial to the caudal region. The section shows the brain within the cranial cavity and the spinal cord running along the developing vertebral column. The nasal and oral cavities, pharynx, and their continuity with the digestive tract are identifiable, together with thoracic and abdominal viscera at a fetal stage, including heart, lungs, and liver. The vertebral column, ribs, and limb buds or developing limbs display an ossification pattern consistent with an advanced fetal stage, clearly illustrating the topographic relationships between organ systems.

What can we learn from this specimen?
  • Understand the global anatomical organization of the porcine fetal body and the relative position of the main organ systems.
  • Analyze the continuity between the central nervous system and the musculoskeletal axis during development.
  • Recognize the degree of maturation and spatial arrangement of fetal viscera in relation to adult anatomy.
How can this specimen be used for teaching?
  • For integrated teaching of veterinary anatomy and embryology in domestic mammals.
  • As a model to explain congenital defects and developmental disorders with clinical relevance.
  • To correlate fetal anatomy with topographic and functional anatomy of the adult pig.
