What is it in this specimen?

Median sagittal hemisection of an equine digit, showing the distal limb from the distal third of the metacarpus/metatarsus to the hoof. The specimen clearly displays the first, second and third phalanges aligned in the proximal interphalangeal and distal interphalangeal joints, with well-preserved articular cartilage. The hoof capsule is sectioned longitudinally, allowing identification of the dorsal hoof wall, sole, and the relationship between the distal phalanx and the hoof capsule. On the palmar/plantar aspect, the deep digital flexor tendon can be followed to its insertion on the flexor surface of the distal phalanx, closely associated with the navicular region and surrounding soft tissues.

What we can learn from this specimen?
  • Understand the precise spatial relationship between phalanges, joints, and the hoof capsule in the equine digit.
  • Appreciate the course and insertion of the deep digital flexor tendon relative to the distal interphalangeal joint and distal phalanx.
  • Visualize how hard and soft tissues integrate to support weight-bearing and locomotion in the horse.
How can this specimen be used for teaching?
  • To teach clinically oriented anatomy of the equine foot, especially structures involved in lameness and distal limb pathology.
  • To correlate imaging findings (radiographs, MRI) with real anatomical sections of the distal limb.
  • To support discussions on biomechanical function and common disorders of the distal interphalangeal joint and surrounding soft tissues.
