What is it in this specimen?1. What is it in this specimen?

A right-sided canine thoracic cavity dissection extending caudally into the cranial abdomen, with the thoracic wall (ribs and intercostal musculature) opened to expose the pleural cavity and adjacent mediastinal region. At the level of the pulmonary hilus, multiple cut tubular lumina are visible, consistent with transected bronchial and/or vascular structures entering the lung root. Caudally, the thoracoabdominal transition is evident at the diaphragm, with cranial abdominal viscera exposed—most prominently the liver immediately caudal to the diaphragm.

What can we learn from this specimen?
  • Hilus concept: how major airways and vessels converge at the pulmonary root and how this region is embedded in connective tissue.
  • Topography: the right-sided spatial relationship between thoracic wall, pleural cavity, and the caudal boundary formed by the diaphragm.
  • Thoracoabdominal continuity: the close apposition of the diaphragm to cranial abdominal organs (especially the liver) and why thoracic and abdominal pathology can influence each other.
How can this specimen be used for teaching?
  • Clinical access planning: discuss right intercostal approaches to the pleural cavity (thoracocentesis/chest drain principles) with emphasis on avoiding intercostal neurovascular structures and appreciating organ proximity.
  • Surgery-oriented anatomy: use the pulmonary hilus view to introduce safe handling concepts around bronchovascular structures during thoracic procedures.
  • Imaging correlation: reinforce interpretation of radiographs/ultrasound by linking diaphragm position and liver silhouette to right-sided thoracic and cranial abdominal landmarks.
